Media relations is a must. Get as much press for your grand opening as possible. Make it a point to invite every member of the media that you possibly can. This principle goes back to the old adage that you throw as much stuff against the wall as possible and some of it will definitely stick. The more members of the media you invite, the more coverage you are likely to get. A great deal of press is what will alert people to your grand opening and pique their interest.
Step 2
Decorate, decorate, decorate. There is nothing store patrons like more than a grand opening filled with lots of fanfare. It generates excitement in the store atmosphere--which usually results in increased sales. Put balloons and other party decorations around the interior and exterior of the store. You can do an official ribbon cutting and even drop confetti from the sealing when opening the doors to the store for customers for the first time. The more exciting you make the décor, the more it enhances the overall event.
Step 3
Hold contests and raffles for in-store merchandise. You should also have some grand opening discounts for your customers. This not only brings more people out--because everyone likes to win or get a discount on something--but also gives them a sample of your merchandise, which usually encourages them to buy more. The prizes dont have to be huge. They can be small trinkets so that your cost for the grand opening isnt driven higher, but the more you give away, the more sales will follow.
Step 4
Dont underestimate the power of the extras, like face painters or live music. The more your grand opening feels like one big party, the more people will come and the longer they will stay, which ultimately translates into higher sales. Hire a DJ or live band. Have clowns, jugglers or face painters. Whatever the constraints of your grand opening event budget will allow, work in as many event extras as you can to make your grand opening feel just that much more exciting.
